Minutes from September 2009 Meeting

I am finally getting around to sending out minutes from our September 2009 meeting…. Yeah I know it's the last day of September!

We met a Jay's house for byo lunch and worked on our own projects. Metal clay, great conversation and Jay provided chocolate éclairs for dessert….. It doesn't get any better than that!

The October meeting featuring Natural Treasures will be at Jay's. We will share ways to incorporate pods, pinecones, bark, cactus skeletons into our jewelry. Please bring any interesting natural treasures to use and share and mold compound. (We will have some available for purchase if you don't have any already.) The meeting will be at Jay's, October 11, at noon (bring your own lunch.)
Minutes from June 2009 Meeting

We did have a great time at Jay's. She taught us all about metal clay veneer and we were fortunate enough to have a hands on class making veneer bezels! I know I will be using this technique often. I attached a few pictures and you can see more on our web site soon! Since the class went over our allotted time we took our pieces home to set the stones so the finished one is mine. Please send photos of your finished pieces to our Web Goddess, Barbara Bullock, africat@cox.net Some members plan on doing resin at our July meeting in their bezel cups!

Our next meeting will be mold making and resin at Kim Keast's house on July 12. These are different mold making and resin products than most of us are familiar with so please join us in Tubac at 9:50 AM! We will start working promptly at 10. Kim will have drinks and dessert just bring a sack lunch and you may also bring a small object to make a mold of. Kim will also have the mold putty available in 1/2 lb. packages for sale if you want to take some home for $6.50.

Please RSVP now to me at goodmusedesigns@aol.com  or Kim at kimkeastart@yahoo.comto get the address. Many plan to carpool... so keep us updated!

At the June meeting::

We clarified and voted on the cost of classes for our guild meetings. Each student will pay $10 to the instructor for each class.... (I can hear some of you groaning but come on.... Where can you get a class for $10,,,, our instructors usually get paid a lot more per student to teach these techniques!)

In addition students will provide their own supplies that most metal clay artist have. If there are any weird supplies the instructor will notify the guild and they will be paid from our treasury.

Discussed using money from our treasury to offset the cost of guest instructors and talked about the possibility of having Cindy Moore teach wire weaving in October.

Decided that the encaustic painting would be a side workshop for those interested and not presented at a meeting. Many have expressed an interest in this so be sure to let us know if you would like to be included.... more details to follow.

Members that were at the meeting updated there contact information to include: Name, email address, mailing address (yes you can give us a PO box), and phone number. If you did not attend the meeting please email Lucy, (cholulalu@gmail.com) with updates ASAP! These updates will save us from having to look up addresses for meetings, etc..... and you never know when someone might want to mail you a personal invitation or note! This list is for members only and will not be shared with other individuals or organizations.... your information is safe with us!

I hope your creativity is coming easily today...here is a quote to get you going!
Creativity is the power to connect the seemingly unconnected.

Jay relayed the information for the Cindy Moore class and we voted to have Cindy at our November meeting for her "Change-a-Bead Ring" class. Since we are PMC people we will first construct a metal clay bead or top (or a few depending on how fast you work), then Cindy will teach us how to construct the ring shank to enable us to change our ring tops! The cost for this is $35 (plus supplies, sheet silver about 1'x 3"and PMC3). We must have at least 10 people for this class to get the $35 price. The class fee will be due at the October meeting.

December is our Holiday potluck party. We are looking for someone to act as Host. We will have our metal clay ornament exchange. Any form of metal clay is acceptable including bronze and copper!

January-June We are also looking for people to step up and lead some of our meeting topics. Do you have a skill that the rest of us can learn? Origami? Soldering on metal clay? Clasps and connections? ???? Any subject that can be applied to metal clay will work.

February- Gem show reception. I have contacted Rio and hope to hear back from them soon. Until them we will assume the reception is still on. We have decided that this year everyone will be responsible for their own display. To create a uniform display, please plan to display your jewelry on a multi opening picture frame. We will discuss this at future meetings.

Leslie Jensen and I were lucky enough to participate in an online group called "Finding your voice as a PMC artist over the summer. I would also like to know if anyone is interested in participating in something like this every month? You would be provided with some type of inspiration and then you would create a piece to stretch your creativity. Each meeting we could bring our finished pieces for show and tell. Every person would get their own inspiration so that no two people are working from the same inspiration. Please let me know if this is something you would be interested in doing.

On October 24 the metal heads (our sister chapter in Phoenix are having a reception with wine tasting and an art show. It would be wonderful if we could support them in this and carpool up for the day. Anyone interested?

I hope to see ALL of you at our October 11 Meeting! Please RSVP to me at goodmusedesigns@aol.com or Jay at jay@metalclayveneer.com. If anyone wants to carpool just let me know.

After lunch, Michelle Spanyard, president, opened the meeting and welcomed everyone. There were 20 members and guests in attendance. Thank you, Marnie, for hosting us today. And, a huge THANK YOU to Nancy Palmer and Jay Humphreys for furthering our education on stone setting techniques!

Charms for Charity was discussed and it was decided that our guild would again donate a bracelet. All the money from the raffle will go to cancer research. (All the details on the PMC Guild website. Go to the website, then click on conference and then special events and there you will find the Charms for Charity info.) Here's the info about the charms themselves:
Charms
  • - Charms can be made of any metal clay type
  • - The approximate size should be that of a dime or nickel.
  • Submit as many as you'd like or just one.
  • - Subject matter is up to the artist.
  • - A 16g - 18g 5 mm open jump ring should be attached or other strong jump ring.
  • - Include a card or note with your:  NAME,  CONTACT INFORMATION (optional - sometimes people like to acknowledge your gift) and a PICTURE of your CHARM (optional - it will help identify your charm among the others on the bracelet)
After the charms discussion, we divided into two groups and Nancy Palmer did a presentation of various ways to set stones as well as giving us various sources for the settings, while Jay Humphreys did a presentation of setting stones using veneer. Jay also presented some suggestions for future programs. Thanks ladies!

Nancy Palmer is getting together websites for sources of setting supplies - bezels, wire, etc, which I'll send out as soon as I have them.

Our next meeting will be April 11 at noon at Jay Humphreys' home. Directions will be sent out to those who need them. Marnie Ehlers and Doris King will demo more stone settings and details will follow in another e-mail.

Our May meeting will be held at Michelle Spanyard's home on May 16 (a week later than usual due to Mother's Day) and we'll work with resin. If you have the October 2009 issue of Jewelry Artist magazine, there is a great article about combining PMC and resin. Details for the May meeting along with a supply list will be sent out closer to the May meeting!

Jay compiled a list of suggestions for meetings which follows. Please choose the five projects you'd like most to do and send me your list. We'll compile a list and work on those projects for future meetings - probably beginning with them in September or October.

Michelle adjourned the meeting at 3:00 p.m. and it can be said that a good time was had by all!

April 11, 2010 Meeting

We had a fun meeting yesterday and a big THANK YOU to Jay for hosting the meeting! Those of you who missed the meeting missed delicious home made lemon pie! Thanks Jay!

Doris King presented a wonderful program on stone setting and everyone brought stones to discuss setting options. Doris brought beautiful examples of how she's set different stones with different methods. A great interactive afternoon!

If you haven't completed your charm for charity, make sure it's done and ready at the May 16 meeting so we can get them on a bracelet and sent to the conference for the raffle.

Those present voted on future programs. Those will be presented at the May meeting!

Mark your calendars now for May 16 at noon. Details for the program using resins will be sent out closer to the meeting!
